Another top award for the Zoo e-News! The Zoo e-News has won the South African Publication Forum's award for Best Electronic Publication for the second year, against stiff competition. Close on 150 publications, electronic newsletters and DVDs were entered into the competition this year. Publications were judged in terms of writing, communication, design and photography.
At a glittering red carpet event in Johannesburg on 25 March 2012, the Zoo e-News was awarded a prestigious PRISM Award by the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA). The newsletter was edited by Mitzi du Plessis, and I designed and created each issue of the newsletter till end October 2013. The award was given in the category "Publications" and the judges considered how the newsletter contributed towards achieving the overall public relations and business strategy of the zoo. "Zoo e-News illustrated how an electronic newsletter could serve as a powerful marketing tool in an organisation's customer relations management," the judges commented. At the event the Chairperson of the PRISA Public Relations Consultants Chapter, Lorraine van Schalkwyk said, "Once again our strategic communication professionals have demonstrated that we can produce world-class strategies and publications worthy of an international stage." The competition attracted over 200 entries. The awards promote excellence in public relations and strategic communication in South Africa.
The National Zoo site won a bronze in the SA Web Awards. The judges liked the following aspects: good quality photographs, attractive homepage, carefully edited, informative and enjoyable content, good information about the zoo. In conclusion they said: "Your website is attractive and has a lot of useful information, which is reflected in your website's relatively high scores in the content and functionality categories. Your website has many positive attributes and scored a solid Bronze SA Web Award. Well done!".

One of my favourite projects is designing and creating each issue of the Zoo e-News. The online newsletter took top honours for the best electronic newsletter in 2008 at the SA Publication Forum's Corporate Publication Competition award ceremony held in Midrand. The judges' comments included the following: "The publication reflects very positively on the organisation and reaches its objectives of communicating the National Zoo's transformation and latest developments. This is a highly accessible newsletter - it navigates well and the reader is never at a loss of where to go to next."
The National Zoo website won a SA Web Awards silver award for its content, layout, functionality and overall appeal. Creating and maintaining this website is always a pleasure - working with the Zoo team till end October 2013 was very rewarding.
